The Dead Old Man

Dr. Aiswarya V Namboodiri
Family Medicine specialist
Iqraa Hospital
Calicut, Kerala

I have often seen in hospital ICUs and in the neighbourhood , few people cracking jokes and making fun of the dead, especially of the elderly frail people who had been bed ridden for a while. They were mostly people with multiple comorbidities, memory loss and dementia. And I thought, doesn’t death deserve any respect??

Don’t laugh at the old man
Who now lies dead
Who had been sick for a while
And caused his people distress

Don’t make fun of him
Or say ,"he was a burden anyway"
Because once he too had been
All healthy and hale

Don't say he was a loser
A source of constant stress
Because once when he was born
His parents had celebrated

He may not have fought for the country
Or won any glorious awards
But may have served his family
Fighting all odds and adversities

He may have been
Something to somebody
A sweetheart of his wife
Who for him, would have sacrificed her life
A doting father to his children
Who would have always kept him on the run

Never ignore the forgotten feelings
Even though the man is now gone
He may have been invalid
And now his people, better off

Time will never remain the same
We too will age
One day we will meet his fate
And be burnt down into flames

Never laugh at death
Death is not a joke
Inevitable and strong
We wont even know
When we too, will be gone!!
